The Blues Project
The Valparaiso Blues Project is a music program based in Valparaiso, Indiana whose aim is to pass on the music and history of the blues to the next generation of musicians through numerous educational and performance opportunities. The Valparaiso Blues Project operates in conjunction with Front Porch Music to provide an exciting pathway for young musicians to enter the world of live performance. The program was founded by Scott Cvelbar, and is currently led by music instructors Isaiah Vargas and Jordan Collier. Throughout the course, students will learn how professional musicians play the blues, how to play in a large band setting, and the cultural relevance blues music has in our lives.
The Valparaiso Blues Project distinguishes itself from many other youth music programs in two significant ways. First and foremost is its emphasis on true American history. Every song performed carries a rich historical significance, be it cultural or musical. This history is not only taught to the students, but is also shared with the audience at the time of the concerts. What further sets The Valparaiso Blues project apart is the real-time collaboration between students and adults. Rarely is there an opportunity in which students are able to play side by side with their instructors and other musicians in the area. It's truly an engaging and unique experience for youth to stand on stage with professionals, basking in the same spotlight, feeling the music in the way it's meant to be felt, and receiving genuine encouragement from adults who are traveling alongside them through the journey of music.
