The Blues Project
The Blues Project is a music program based in Valparaiso, Indiana whose aim is to pass on the music and history of the blues to the next generation of musicians through numerous educational and performance opportunities. The Blues Project conducts workshops, sponsors educational trips, and performs throughout Northwest Indiana. The program was founded by Scott Cvelbar, and is anchored by a dedicated group of professionals who provide the foundation for up-and-coming student musicians to showcase their musical talents. Many times, other guest musicians also share their knowledge and enthusiasm with the students and join the band at performances or events, passing on valuable lessons on their craft and career.
Two things set the Blues Project apart from so many other youth music programs. First is the emphasis on history. Each of the songs that are performed are precisely chosen for their historical significance, either culturally or musically, and that history is shared with both the students and the audience. The second thing that sets the Blues Project apart is the real-time collaboration between students and adults. Rarely do you see instructors playing side by side with their students, reveling in the magic that only comes alive during live performance. It is a special and unique experience for kids to be on stage with professionals, sharing the same spotlight, experiencing the music the way is it supposed to feel, and receiving genuine encouragement from adults who are traveling with them on the same musical journey.
