The Valparaiso Organization for Learning and Teaching Seniors (VOLTS) invited me to speak yesterday at their October meeting about what the Blues Project is all about. It was a wonderful experience, and I had the honor of meeting and talking to a number of kind, intelligent, and curious individuals who seemed genuinely interested in what we're doing with the blues here at BF. Cheers to Valparaiso University and VOLTS for providing such interesting and important educational opportunities to the seniors in our community. You can check out more about VOLTS here: www.valpo.edu/continuinged/nondegree/volts.php
The segment on the Blues Project will be airing during the full Eye on the Arts program this Friday, October 7th at 7:00pm CST. You can catch it live on Channel 56 (for Dish Network, DirecTV, and AT&T U-Verse), or Channel 17/21 (for Comcast) at that time.
The segment will also be available online at www.lakesholakeshorepublicmedia.org/eye-on-the-arts-the-blues-project/republicmedia.org after the initial airing on television. A camera crew from Lakeshore Public Television's "Eye on the Arts" paid a visit to our rehearsal last night to grab some interviews and footage for an upcoming segment on the Blues Project. Look for the segment to air sometime in October for a new episode of "Eye on the Arts."
Don't forget that we have two great shows coming up in September for the Blues Project All-Stars. The first is on September 3rd at County Line Orchard. It will be opening weekend for the Orchard and the joint will be hopping. The Blues Project will take the outdoor stage from 3-6pm, so you'll have plenty of time to load up on donuts, apples, and cider before we go on. The other is our return to Taltree on Sept. 17 when we get to open for Planetary Blues and grammy nominated guitarist John Primer. It's one you certainly won't want to miss.
Thanks to Fernando Jones and the Blues Kids Foundation, we were able to send 10 Blues Project kids to Blues Camp in Chicago last week. Like real bluesmen, we rode the train into the city and walked to Columbia College, where the camp was held. Each day the campers met together to hear a guest speaker or performance, and then broke up into smaller ensembles and rehearsed a handful of songs to perform. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, these esembles played at Reggie's, The Glessner Mansion, and the Hard Rock Cafe. We went to the Zoo on Tuesdaya We even were given a hotel room on Wednesday night, so we had some time to check out the Chess museum and eat at Legends. It was an unforgettable experience and I hope that we can do it again next year!
Mark your calendars for July 2nd! The Blues Project will be opening up for Seth Walker and Corey Dennison at Taltree Arboretum. We go on at 6pm and we'll be featuring some of the most talented students from Blues Projects past, present, and future. Tickets are $15 and are available on the Taltree website.
Thanks to Fernando Jones and the Blues Kids foundation for inviting us to play again at the 2016 Chicago Blues Festival! We played three sets on a relatively chilly day in the windy city, and everybody had a blast. Some Blues Project alumni even came home from college to give us a hand. Thanks to all the parents, kids, and fans who came out to enjoy a great summer day in Chicago. Lets do it again next year.
Ben Franklin's Blues Project All-Stars will be playing three times during the Chicago Blues Fest on Sunday, June 12th, at 1:20, 3:30, and 5:10 at the Blues Kids Foundation tent on the corner of Columbus and Jackson Streets in Chicago's Grant Park. The Chicago Blues Fest is the largest free blues festival in the world, so we're extremely grateful to Fernando Jones for inviting us back this year. Come and check out some of the most talented kids who have been a part of the Blues Project over the years, and hang out in Grant Park and soak up some real Chicago Blues all day long.
