Chicago Bluesman Fruteland Jackson came and gave a musical history lesson to our 8th graders at Ben Franklin Middle School to kick off this year's Blues Project. This is Fruteland's third year presenting, and as always, it was an entertaining and enjoyable experience. Not only did he take us through 300 years of African-American music, explaining the development and evolution of the blues, he also played several "freedom songs" from the Civil Rights Movement, which is the main theme of the Blues Project this year. Fruteland ended his presentation about the explained about the process of writing a blues song, calling up two student volunteers to craft their own blues on stage together. Fruteland will be back to perform at our concert finale on March 15th. You won't want to miss it.
